Wilbur Mathes, age 78, of Newport passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Newport Medical Center. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service having served in Korea and Vietnam. He was also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the Southside Baptist Church where he served as Senior Citizen Director. He was also a volunteer with the Red Cross.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty JoAnn Mathes, mother of his children; daughter-in-law, Kathy Mathes; and brothers, Richard Mathes and Bill Williams.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Mathes of Newport; son, Carl Andrew Mathes of Harvest, AL; daughter Susan Darlene (Ronnie) Shepherd; step-brother, Lloyd Williams of Crossville; grandchildren, Laura Shepherd and Michael Shepherd both of Newport; aunt, Elma James of Cosby; and several other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 pm Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charlie Boggan officiating. Entombment will be held at 11:00 am Monday, April 21, 2014 in Resthaven Memorial Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Sunday prior to funeral services.
