BYBEE-”It was a day of celebration at Bybee United Methodist Church on Sunday, Sept. 22, when church members and friends gathered for the congregation's 100th anniversary.
Situated alongside Hwy. 160, the church began life as Bybee Methodist Church, South in the summer of 1913, when Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Lovell gave land for the construction of a Methodist church in the Bybee community.
A week later, on July 21, 1913, volunteers started hauling block from Newport to begin construction. Two days later, July 23, 1913, John Posey began work laying the concrete foundation.
Over the next century, the structure has undergone various expansions and renovations. Johnny Buckner, Chairman of the Administrative Council, highlighted points of the church’s establishment and growth on Sunday, calling attention to the “block outside,” a marble cornerstone.
“William Browning was our first pastor,” Buckner said, “and the early members included the Kirk, Redwine, Scott, and Holdway families, names we don’t have now.”
Buckner recalled the day of hats. “The men all wore hats,” he said, “and as they came in ?lled a rack back there. The women always wore hats, too, but kept their on during church. As a little boy, I always thought that was odd.”
Buckner also reminisced about the church’s original wooden ceiling, the potbellied stove used for heating, and the brick chimney.
“The old pews had round dowel-like seats that would pinch you if you sat down wrong,” he laughed. “There was also no plumbing—just an outhouse out back. We had no air-conditioning, but funeral homes were good about giving out fans. If you were lucky, you could sit close to someone with a fan and get cooled.”
Various additions and changes over the years resulted in the church having three different ceilings at one time. “In 1999, Terry Snell came here as pastor and saw what the building could be. Workers took out the three ceilings. This is what P.J. VanStratum and his crew built. Isn’t it beautiful?”
Other memories included the story of a Wednesday night prayer meeting when a highly intoxicated woman came through the doors. “By the time the evening was over, she was happy, sober, and shouting,” said a member.
Former member, Cheryl Bible Presnell, laughed about the time she became very angry over her parents’ insistence that she polish the church ?oor in preparation for the Sunday service instead of staying home to watch President Kennedy’s funeral.
Rev. Tom Ballard, United Methodist District Superintendent, was guest speaker. Introduced by church pastor, Rev. Roy Dalton, Ballard ?rst “brought greetings” from Bishop Mary Virginia Taylor and over 100 churches in the Morristown District, stretching “from Sneedville to Cosby and from Strawberry Plains to Greeneville.”
In his remarks, Ballard told the congregation, “Today we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. You can just picture those who have been faithful here for over 100 years. They cheer us on. This life is only a rehearsal for what goes on around the Lamb’s throne.”
Ballard then told the crowd, “But Bybee United Methodist Church is not just a church that looks backward,” and praised the group’s growing meals program. “You are a church that goes out into the community serving about 150 meals a week on six different routes.”
The Bybee Singers and The Brickley Family provided special music during the service and a covered dish meal was served after the program.
