Frances W. "Polly" Edgemon, 93, passed away peacefully at God's VIP Senior Haven in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Lynn Edgemon, in November 1989. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Jamie Claiborne Warren and Ray McFee Warren; her brothers, Ray Jr. and Don; and her sister, Mary W. Fletcher.
Mrs. Edgemon was born in Bearden, Tenn., on June 18, 1914. She was a 1932 graduate of Farragut High School, where she played basketball. She then attended business school in Knoxville, Tenn. Upon graduation, she worked for the Knoxville News Sentinel. During World War II, Polly was a Red Cross volunteer, knitting many warm garments for the troops in Europe. She married Lynn Edgemon on March 4, 1943, in Baton Rouge, La. Polly was a 45-year resident of Owensboro. Polly and Lynn were faithful members of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist, with Polly's membership reaching 50 years. She worked at The Paper Mill in Wesleyan Park Plaza for many years. She was also active in the United Methodist Women, the 1215 Club, Owensboro Civinettes, the Junior Women's Club, Girl Scouts and the YWCA. Polly was a great cook and enjoyed sewing, gardening and crafts.
Polly is survived by her daughter, Jamie Edgemon Smith and son-in-law, Randy D. Smith, of Fort Lauderdale; her son, H.L. Edgemon II and daughter-in-law, Jean S. Edgemon, of Chesterton, Ind.; her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter D. Warren of Knoxville; her sister-in-law, Louise Warren Clotfelter of Knoxville; her grandson, Joshua C. Edgemon of Crown Point, Ind., and his children, Logan and Luca; and one step-granddaughter, Crystal L. Smith of Coconut Creek, Fla..; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
The family wishes to thank her neighbors and church friends for their devoted support over the years since Polly was widowed. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations, in the memory of Polly and Lynn Edgemon, to Wesleyan Heights UMC Building Fund, 1215 Scherm Road, Owensboro, Kentucky 42301.
Glenn Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday between 6 and 8 p.m. The service will be at noon Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home, followed by interment at Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
