Tyrone Paul “Tony” Frye, 68, of Bristol, Virginia went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday Morning, May 21st at Kindred Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina with his family at his side.
He was a member of Ottway United Methodist Church in Greeneville, TN.
Born in Greeneville, Tennessee, May 12th, 1943, the son of Paul D. Frye and Faye Price Frye. He is a graduate of Ottway High School in Greene County; received a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from East Tennessee State University, and his Masters in Business Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Following his graduation from East Tennessee State, he worked as a Quality Control Chemist for Carters Ink in Crossville, Tennessee; Quality Control Manager for M&T Chemicals in Carrollton, Kentucky; Personnel Manager for Meredith-Burda in Lynchburg, Virginia; and Manager of Training and Development for Raytheon in Bristol, Tennessee. In 1983, he and his wife, Anne, opened an independent insurance agency in Bristol, Virginia. As president of Frye-Shaffer Insurance for 28 years, he set a standard of excellence and led one of the most well-respected insurance agencies in the Tri-Cities area.He served on the Executive Committee of the National Safety Council and was a speaker at the National Safety Congress.
Tony holds the prestigious Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter designation (CPCU), the Certified Insurance Counselor designation (CIC), and the Accredited Adviser in Insurance designation (AAI). He frequently taught continuing education classes for agents and associations in Tennessee and Virginia. The son of two high school teachers and the grandson of two of East Tennessee’s early educators, he also enjoyed teaching adult Sunday School classes and tutoring his nine grandchildren in science and math.
In 1971, he was appointed a Kentucky Colonel by Governor, Louie B. Nunn, for his outstanding community service as president of the Carrollton Jaycees. In 1976, he served as President of the Lynchburg Jaycees and was elected as a state officer in 1977. He was a member of the Bristol Jaycees, was awarded a life membership in the Virginia Jaycees, and was elected to the JCI Senate.
He was a proud American and served his country in the Tennessee Air National Guard. He enjoyed working on the family farm in Greene County, where he planned to retire, traveling with his wife and family, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and his three cocker spaniels. He is survived by the apple of his eye, his wife, and best friend of 46 years, Anne Hartman Frye; his pride and joy, his three children and their spouses, Ed and Angie (Frye) Shaffer of Sevierville, Tennessee, Randy and Jennifer (Frye) Sheets of Isle of Palms, South Carolina; and Randall Tyrone and Kelly Frye of Savannah, Georgia. His Mother, Faye Price Frye of Greeneville, Tennessee. Nine grandchildren: Christian, Conner, Cameron, and Cayden Tyrone Sheets of Isle of Palms, SC; Austin and Zachary Paul Shaffer of Sevierville, TN; Aaron, Hannah, and Elise Frye of Savannah, GA. Sisters–in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Hartman Halliburton and Hervie and Donna Hartman, all of Knoxville, TN. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Dewey Frye.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm on Monday Evening, May 23rd at Akard Funeral Home and at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church following the graveside services. Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Tuesday, May 24th at Akard Funeral Home Chapel in Bristol, Tennessee. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 pm at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Greeneville, TN. Rev. Donna Waddle and Rev. Lloyd Sheets will officiate. Pallbearers will be Christian Sheets, Conner Sheets, Austin Shaffer, Randy Sheets, Ed Shaffer, Kelly Frye, Johnny Collins, and Hervie Hartman. The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to their wonderful Kindred Hospital family and to their dedicated Frye Shaffer Insurance family for the loving care, prayers, and support given to Tony.
