Hamilton, James Gerval, was born May 4, 1922, in Kingston, Tennessee. He passed away November 11, 2012. He fought a long and courageous battle with a number of injuries and illnesses that began when he was severely wounded in Southern France during World War II. He was disabled as a result of those injuries and the lingering complications, but he never complained nor let those disabilities distinguish his life. He loved his country and was proud of his service to his country. He was "tough as nails," and those who knew him understood how The United States of America won "the war." One of the best memories from his final years came from his HonorAir Trip to Washington D.C. to see the World War II Memorial. How fitting that his passing was postponed until November 11, Veterans' Day. He was a soldier to the end. He was indeed a member of "The Greatest Generation."
For 68 years, James was married to his wife, Juanita (Polly) and raised two daughters, Vicki Andrews and Jo An Tharp. He showed them a never give-up drive combined with a gentle spirit. He leaves behind his wife and his two daughters along with their husbands Jim and Grant. He is also survived by granddaughters, Jennie Andrews, Jessica Andrews Brackett and husband Bentley, Wallis Tharp, and grandson, Owen Tharp and his fiancé, Maggie Tobias. In addition, he is survived by his brother, W.H. Hamilton of Kingston. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. He has several nieces and nephews. He was a humble, Christian man who loved his family deeply. He was a member of Stock Creek Baptist Church.
James Hamilton was a true volunteer in many ways. He volunteered to serve his country. He volunteered to help anyone who needed his help. And he loved his University of Tennessee Volunteers. If the Volunteers were playing, he was watching. And ever true to his nature, he did not like losing. Actually, he hated losing and always had a plan for how the game could have been improved. He loved the mountains, woods and waters of East Tennessee. He was an outdoor man, and well into his 90th year, walked outdoors almost daily.
James Hamilton's final wish was to be interred in the East Tennessee Veterans' Cemetery , 2200 West Governor John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920. He remarked that throughout his life he had fished many times in the river running along the property. A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 14. The family will receive friends from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at the family home at 1522 Graybrook Lane. Friends are invited to call at their convenience. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to HonorAir to ensure that our American veterans from East Tennessee are honored for their sacrifice and "gift of democracy." Information is available at HonorAirKnoxville.com. The family would like to express their grateful appreciation to the extraordinary staff of the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
