(March 6, 1916 - May 27, 2009)
Hope Correll Shults, age 93, passed away on May 27, 2009 at Baptist Hospital of Newport with her daughters at her side. She was born on March 6, 1916 to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mack Correll of Cocke County. Known for her gentle spirit and loving nature, she was loved by all who knew her. Called “Hopie” by her family and close friends, she loved trips to the mountains and travels with her sister Marjorie; family reunions and her grandchildren; and her collections of butterflies and angels. She especially loved her two daughters, Judy and Carolyn, who will miss her greatly. Active in her community and church, she was a member of the 20th Century Club and Newport Garden Club. She also served as an elder at Newport Presbyterian Church. Hope graduated from East Tennessee State University where she was on the women’s softball , archery, and croquet teams. She taught school until she married the late Judson Kay Shults, who was the owner of Stokely Shults drug store on Main Street. Hope and Judson moved to Knoxville and spent the next twenty years devoted to their girls and to the expansion of Todd and Armistead Drug Stores. While in Knoxville, she was a member of Cherokee Country Club and Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church. Several years after Judson’s death, Hope returned to Newport and taught school until she retired. Hope is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Amanda Maude Correll; her brothers Mack Truman (Jim) and James Nile Correll; and her sisters Dorothy Jones, Marjorie Overholt, and Gloria Jean Coulter. She is survived by her daughters Judith Kaye Shults, of Asheville, North Carolina and Carolyn Hope Shults Granade and her husband Mercer Walker Granade, of Atlanta,Georgia; and grandchildren Matthew Walker Granade and wife Hannah of Norwalk, Connecticut; Amanda Hope Granade, of Atlanta, Georgia; and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family wants to thank her loving caregivers Mary Lou Dennis and Christine Whaley; her doctor, Dr. James Williams; and the staff at Baptist Convalescent Center for the special love and care given to Hopie. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 1, 2009 at 4 p.m. at Newport Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Calvin Metcalf officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. The family would be honored if, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts were made to Newport Presbyterian Church, 399 Hedrick Drive, Newport, Tennessee 37821.
