STATUM, MSGT WILLIAM F., USAF (RET) - age 75 passed away Thursday June 19, 2008 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Bill retired in 1973 after 22 years of military service to his country, 13 as a U.S. Marine - during both the Korean and Vietnam wars, 9 years in the U.S. Air Force during which he was stationed in Okinawa, the Philippines and several bases in the U.S. During his Air Force career, he was twice awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. Following his return to Knoxville, Mr. Statum was employed for 16 years at The American Museum of Science and Energy, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was a member of the West View United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by father and mother, Benjamin F. and Margaret Anne Yates Statum, and two sisters, Benita Anne Blakely and Caroline Pearl Dinerman. Survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Human Statum; daughters, Janice McFarland, Las Vegas, NV, Elizabeth and Michael Swonson, Hurricane, UT, Letita and Terry Pendley, West Valley City, UT, and Teresa and Earl Shinpaugh, Knoxville; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas A. Statum of Va. and James A, Statum of Fl.; and one sister, Mary Dahl, Ga. The family will receive friends Monday June 23, 2008 from 6-8 pm at Highland Memorial Funeral Home (Bearden). A celebration service will follow with Reverend Bruce Spangler officiating. Graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 3:00 PM at Highland Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard.
