Dr. Maurice A. Phillips, of Sevierville, TN, died Sunday, February 18, 2001 at Fort-Sanders Sevier Medical Center in Sevierville,TN.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Martha Woods Phillips , and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on January 16, 1924, he graduated from Red Bank High School in 1942.
As a journalist, educator, psychologist and a clergyman, he held degrees from Florida Southern College, Scarritt College, George Peabody/Vanderbilt and did additional studies at Emory (Chandler School of Theology) and Arizona State.
He was an editor for the Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, Tennessee and Editor of Devotional Literature for The Upper Room, a Methodist publication.
As a clergyman he held pastorates in the United Methodist Church in Tennessee, Florida , Texas and Arizona, as well as appointments to the Presbyterian and Disciples of Christ churches.
At the time of this retirement he was a Teacher-Counselor of Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona.
As a journalist, he held positions with the Chattanooga Times as Sports Reporter and the Birmingham Post and was Editor of the Oak Ridge Carbide Courier.
A service to celebrate his life will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 21 at the Bakers Creek Presbyterian Church, 5501 Nine Mile Road, Maryville,Tennessee with the Reverend Cabel W. Trent of Church Street Methodist Church in Knoxville and Reverend Ron Sabo, pastor of Bakers Creek Presbyterian officating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made to the Bakers Creek Presbyterian Church. Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville,TN, will be handling arrangments.
