Pinkston, Commissioner Howard “Nookie”, age 63, surrounded by his loving family, passed away at his home February 14. 2004, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Howard was born, raised and educated in South Knoxville. As a longtime member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church, Howard served as a deacon. He spent his entire adult life as a small businessman employed by Burgin Dodge and then operating Pinkston Motors with his older brother, Paul. Howard was elected to the Knox County Commission in 1990, defeating a popular incumbent. Pinkston’s standing with the people of South Knoxville was such that he was reelected in 1994, 1998 and 2002 without opposition in either the primary or general elections. He served in various capacities as a member of the Commission, chairing the Economic Development Committee, the Board of Zoning Appeals and was a longtime member of the Finance Committee.
