Edward Samuel Weigel
May 10, 1912 - December 29, 2003
Edward S. Weigel was the son of James H. Weigel and Ina Berry Weigel, a nephew to the founder, Ralph L. Berry, Sr. Ed was one of the founding family members and former co-owners of Berry Funeral Home. Ed was employed from 1937 until his death in 2003 were he was Senior Vice President and a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer for 66 years. He was a faithful member of South Knoxville Baptist Church for 76 years and a 50-year member of South Knoxville Masonic Lodge #769 F & A.M., 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite. Ed was one of the driving forces during World War II, maintaining the business while so many of the Berry family were serving overseas. Ed unselfishly gave up his retirement to assist Fred O. Berry, Jr. and Eddie Berry run the business after the death of Fred, Sr. in 1976. Ed was married to Bertha Conner for 68 years.

Weigel, Edward Samuel, age 91, of South Knoxville, passed away December 29, 2003 at Baptist Hospital. Ed was a faithful member of South Knoxville Baptist Church for 76 years. Fifty year member of South Knoxville Masonic Lodge #769 F & AM, 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite. Mr. Weigel was one of the founding family members and former co-owners of Berry Funeral Home were he was Senior Vice President and a licensed Funeral Director for 66 years. Preceded in death by parents, James Henry Weigel and Ina Zelpha Berry Weigel and brother, Robert Vernon Weigel.

Wife of 68 years, Bertha Conner Weigel; nieces, Donna Quillen and husband Bill of Knoxville, Earleene Lyle of Powell; nephews, Dennis Weigel and wife Cathey of Richardson, Texas, Sam Conner and wife Loretta of Powell and James Conner of Melbourne, Florida; Nephew-in-law, Jack Russell, Sr. of Powell; several great and great-great nieces and nephews and many friends.
Service
Funeral service 7:00 PM Wednesday, South Knoxville Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Justice, Dr. Jim McCluskey and Rev. Rick Phipps officiating. Family and friends will meet Thursday at New Gray Cemetery for 1:00 PM interment services. Pallbearers will be employees of Berry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to South Knoxville Baptist Church, 522 Sevier Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37920. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday prior to the funeral service at South Knoxville Baptist Church. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Edward Samuel "Ed" Weigel
a founding family member and former co-owner of the Berry Funeral Home, died Monday at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee. He was 91.
Mr. Weigel, of South Knoxville, worked as a long-time senior vice president at the funeral home.
In the 1930s, his uncle Ralph L. Berry sought him out to help in the founding of what was then the Goodwill Funeral Home, located at 1406 S. Gay St. Shortly after World War II, the funeral home moved to its current location on Chapman Highway, Berry Funeral Home Manager Jeff Berry said.
During the war, Mr. Weigel proved instrumental in the survival of Berry Funeral Home, running the daily operations while several family members were away in active military service.
Mr. Weigel was born in the Forks of the River area of Knox County.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Bertha Conner Weigel. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Henry Weigel and Ina Zelpha Berry Weigel and a brother, Robert Vernon Weigel, Jeff Berry said.
