Gordon Ball announces bid for Senate seat
KNOXVILLE—Cocke County native Gordon Ball will seek the Democratic nomination for the U. S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Lamar Alexander.
Ball, a Knoxville attorney, is the son of Shirley Ball of Newport and the late Virgil Ball. He joins another Knoxville attorney Terry Adams and Nashville resident Larry Crim in seeking the nomination.
Ball said his decision to enter the race is based on his decision that “the country is broken.” Calling today’s lawmakers “professional politicians” instead of “citizen legislators,” he plans to make term limits a focus of his campaign.
Ball has achieved fame as an attorney in class-action lawsuits, such as the ongoing litigation regarding the pollution of the Pigeon River in Cocke County.
His determination and success in that work were motivated, in part, by his early life when he lived close to the river and saw firsthand the pollution from Champion Paper Mill in Canton, North Carolina on Cocke County.
Currently Ball is involved in litigation stemming from the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant Ash Spill.
A graduate of Cosby High School and East Tennessee State University, Ball earned his law degree from the University of Memphis College of Law and has worked as a defense attorney, federal prosecutor, and class action attorney.
A delegate to the last Tennessee Constitutional Convention, he helped rewrite Tennessee’s current constitution.
Ball, 64, said he will devote himself to campaigning fulltime beginning in March.
