Newport Fireman Bryan Gregg died suddenly Tuesday night at his Upper Broad Street home of an apparent aneurysm.
Earlier Tuesday evening Gregg had attended the Newport City Council meeting and afterwards had joined friends for supper at Sagebrush Restaurant before returning home.
Shortly after retiring for the night, Gregg became ill and died. A firefighter for over twenty-seven years, Gregg was the second of three children of retired Newport City Policeman Jimmy Gregg and wife Valda, who survive.
He attended Newport Grammar School and graduated from Cocke County High School in 1979. After working for a short time at Enka, he joined the local fire department.
At the time of his death, Gregg was an engineer, who rotated monthly driving both the pumper and the ladder truck. As a devoted firefighter, Gregg enjoyed working with the department's annual Toys For Tots drive.
Recently he instigated the local ICE identification program, especially in the local schools. This project promotes the keying in of an emergency number in cell phones. An accompanying sticker on the phone identifies the owner as a participant in this program.
If the cell phone owner becomes involved in a serious fire or wreck, firefighters know to call this particular number to notify the next of kin. According to the local department, Gregg first learned of this program which originated overseas and encouraged the local group to promote its local usage.
"It was his baby, and he was proud of its success," said a fellow firefighter. Over the years, Gregg had been active in the Newport Firefighters Association and had served the group as president.
He was also a member of the Tennessee Firefighters Association. In addition to his work as a firefighter, Gregg also worked part-time at Dixie Pawn in Greeneville. In the past he had also worked for Newport Hardware and had sold real estate. In his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Gregg is survived by his wife, Jill; sons Lee Gregg, Cookeville; and Kyle and Devin Bolin, brother, Keith Gregg; sister, Beth Fancher, Newport; and nieces, Megan Fine and Malerie Fancher, all of Newport. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Manes Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow after which the body will be taken by fire truck to Resthaven Memorial Gardens for interment. Manes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
