John Joseph Manning, age 84 of Lenoir City passed away peacefully April 28, 2010 at UT Medical Center surrounded by his family. John was a member of Martel United Methodist Church.
He served honorably as a Seaman, First Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II, receiving the Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal and the Philippine Operations Medal.
After the war, he attended Austin Peay University and the University of Tennessee receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He was hired by Union Carbide Corporation and continued to serve his country supporting the mission of the newly formed Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Before retiring, he gave 36 years of distinguished service to our country’s cold war and post-cold war missions. During his employment with Union Carbide and successor contractors, he worked as an analytical chemist, senior reactor operator, and shift supervisor. He was proud to have continued his education receiving a Master of Science in Water Resources Management from the University of Tennessee.
John loved his retirement “farm” and stayed busy doing tractor work, mowing, tree-trimming and other home projects. He also loved his small breed terriers or any other dog that would stop by for a treat.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sidney Manning and Louise Crow Manning and sister, Sue Manning Hounshell. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Caton Manning; sons and daughters-in-law, Robin and Glenna Manning, Colin and Nancy Manning; grandchildren, Jonathan and Meredith Manning; several nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends 11 a.m. Saturday at Concord United Methodist Church Chapel with a Celebration of Life to follow at 12 noon with Rev. Larry Trotter and Rev. Glenna Manning officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holston Home for Children, 404 Holston Drive, Greeneville, TN 37743 o r the charity of your choice.
