Whaley, Mr. Cleo J., age 83, of Maryville, TN, died December 27, 2005. He was an active and loyal member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church of Cleveland, TN. Cleo was born in Greenbrier, Sevier County, TN, April 5, 1922. He was the fourth child and second son of Isaac Thomas Whaley and Minnie Huskey Whaley. The family moved to Bradley County, TN in 1929 when the family property became part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cleo attended Liberty Grade School and graduated from Bradley Central High School, May 9, 1941. He completed a general business course at Draughon’s Business College, Knoxville, TN, and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on October 21, 1942. Overseas service included the South Pacific and China. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant and received an Honorable Discharge on April 2, 1946.Cleo attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville beginning in the fall of 1946 in the College of Business, and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. Honors included membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma and the University of Tennessee Accounting Society. He was employed by Alcoa, Inc. immediately after graduation and completed a rewarding 38-year career in Accounting and Finance when he retired April 1, 1988. He was a member of the Alcoa 25-Year Club, the University of Tennessee Alumni Association and Institute of Management Accountants. Preceded in death by his parents, one brother William Conard Whaley and four sisters: Viola Randolph, Maggie Kile Cantrell, Lou Wilson, Edith Henry; nephews: William C. Henry and Donald C. Randolph. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Edna Roberts Whaley; daughter Suzann Deborah and her husband David Michael Swiney of Knoxville; daughter Karen Sherry Whaley of Maryville; grandson Gabriel Whaley Swiney and his wife Chrystie of Oxford, England and grandson Elijah Whaley Swiney of New Haven, CT; sister Maxie Davis, Decatur, TN; brother Cayce Whaley and wife Edna of Cleveland, TN; brother Thomas Whaley and wife Frances of Fort Wayne, IN; nephews: Thomas Randolph, Alcoa, TN, William C. Whaley Jr., Gary Davis, Michael Wilson and Roy Eugene Henry of Cleveland, TN, Steve Davis of Athens, TN, Jeffrey and Gregory Whaley of Fort Wayne, IN; nieces: Diana Kile Chapman of Beeville, TX, Imogene Whaley Sherrill of Riceville, TN, Linda Davis Gehron of Chattanooga, TN, Teresa Wilson Rush and Deborah Henry both of Cleveland, TN, Tracy Whaley Barta of Zionsville, IN, Patricia Whaley Glassini of Fort Wayne, IN and several additional nieces and nephews. At Cleo’s request, there will be no memorial service, no calling hours, no flowers and no donations. Family and close friends will meet at 10:30 AM Thursday December 29, 2005, at Grandview Cemetery in Maryville, TN for the internment service, with Elder Richard Martin officiating. Friends and family may gather at the Smith Mortuary Life Event Center following the graveside service.
