Sevier teen killed in auto accident
Pate remembered for character and dedication to teams

SEVIERVILLE - Lance Pate was remembered as a great athlete who had a good reputation among his peers, according to Steve Brewer, head football coach at Sevier County High School.
"He was well liked by all players. He was a good athlete," said Brewer. "He played football as a freshman, but did not play as a sophomore. I was saying all the time, 'You need to come out - we need you.' He came out for spring practice, and he came back with us for the fall."
Pate, 16, of Sevierville, died Saturday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
The accident took place on Boyds Creek Road, as Pate, the only passenger in his vehicle, was driving late Saturday afternoon during a period of heavy rain. His vehicle hydroplaned into the oncoming path of another vehicle, causing a collision.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol was on the scene, but no other specific details were available as of press time.
Pate, who would have been a junior this fall, played running back and defensive back for Sevier County High. His older brother, Zacc, graduated last year and was a star player for the team.
"He was coming on really well. It was a learning thing for him," said Brewer. "I think as we went in football camp, he began to learn and was making good progress.
"He was also a very good basketball player," Brewer continued, "but we were excited about getting him out for football. We knew he would make a good contribution to the program. He was a good kid, and the players liked being around him. I was impressed with what he did to get ready for the football season. He will be missed."
Brewer said plans are in the works for the team to wear a No. 32 decal on their helmets for the season, which was the number also worn by Zacc Pate.
"He was just incredible. I can't really put it in words," said Jerry Morton, Pate's stepfather. He declined to speak any further, understandably grief-stricken.
Todd Chandler, Pate's cousin, immediately described him in one word.
"Bubbly," said Chandler. "He was always carrying a smile, joking and cutting up. He was just silly.
"He just had a passion for life, and he had ambitions and goals. He was a positive young person, and he was always good to be around," Chandler said.
Although he shared a love of football, Pate's passion was basketball, said Chandler.
"He had a basketball in his car when he was killed," said Chandler. "His team was the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. His dream was to play for them."
Pate was also a member of Boyds Creek Church of God. This year, he was a member of the USA Junior National Basketball Team.
In addition to his stepfather and brother, survivors include his mother, Missy Morton; father, Thomas A. Pate; sister, Makayla Pate; grandparents, Katherine Johnson, and Donnie and Wanda Manis.
