NEWPORT-Sheriff Claude Strange and the Cocke County Sheriff's Department are pleased to officially welcome two new certified law enforcement practitioners, deputies Travis Webb and Jason Oury. Webb and Oury graduated from Walter's State Community College's Basic Law Enforcement Academy Friday afternoon.
An eight-week course with a paramilitary-type setting, which included large doses of physical and mental conditioning, the academy graduated 39 recruits of 47 original applicants hailing from all across Tennessee. Oury said one of his fondest memories of the academy was performing pushups on a practice football field near Greene County High School during a torrential downpour.
Though now official, Webb and Oury aren't wet-behind-the-ears in law enforcement. Webb has served as both a reserve deputy and jailer since 2004 and Oury, whose grandfather Eddie Oury was a Tennessee Highway Patrolman, has performed similar work during the past year.
According to Webb and Oury, the pool of instructors at WSCC's BLEA included retired NYPD officers present and on the job during 9/11. "You have to be trained mentally before you can be trained physically," said Oury of the academy. After graduation ceremonies concluded, Oury received a special gift from his father Chip-his late grandfather's THP badge. "It was very special to me and something I will treasure," said the recent recruit."
Strange, who served and retired from the THP prior to becoming sheriff, was recently elected to Executive Council of the training academy at Walter's State. This appointment will allow him to be a decisive asset to the BLEA by overseeing and implementing recruit criteria needed for applicants to be accepted to recruit training. Strange said he was proud of both Webb and Oury plus Cocke County jailer Allan Stump, who also who graduated Friday. Regarding Stump's performance at the academy, Oury said, "He did a fantastic job." Strange added, "He is a nice young man and we will have a future opening for him."
Two more Cocke Countians will be attending the BLEA in July. According to Strange, the WSCC BLEA is comprised of sheriffs and police chiefs from across upper East Tennessee.
