NEWPORT —Longtime Cocke County educator, basketball coach and standout player Jackie Depew died Wednesday after a valiant battle with breast cancer. She was 53.
Depew was a longtime educator with the City of Newport school system where she taught for many years. She was also instrumental within the school's outstanding basketball program for several years.
After receiving her initial diagnosis in 2012, Depew successfully fought the disease, before suffering a recurrence this past spring. Depew continued to teach while battling cancer the first time.
Depew coached the Newport Grammar School Warriors boys basketball team to numerous wins and county championships over the years. Following her success for many years of leading the Warriors on the hardwood, she was also an instrumental part of the girls basketball team success as a practice coach during the years her daughter Shannon played for the team, which resulted in a perfect season and TMSAA East Sectional Championship in 2006.
Depew was regarded as one of the best basketball players in the history of Cocke County sports. In the 1970s, she donned the blue and white No. 42 jersey of Cosby High School and set numerous records for the Lady Eagles. Depew played the game when the TSSAA still required girls teams to play with six players, with three on each end of the court.
Following her high school career, she went on to play collegiately at East Tennessee State University, where she met her husband Shannon Depew, a member of the school's football team.
The couple have two children, both of whom became standout athletes in their own right. Their son Jack, now a teacher at Newport Grammar School, was a three-sport standout at Cocke County High School from 2001 through 2005. He was named to the Tennessee Sports Writer's Association All-State baseball team in 2005.
Their daughter Shannon was one of the best players to play for the Lady Red in recent memory. Scoring over 1,000 points in her high school career, she was one of the catalysts in a remarkable turnaround for the Lady Red program. After winning just two games in the year before her arrival on campus, Cocke County won an impressive 79 games over those four years, before she went on to play at Carson-Newman University for two seasons.
Following Depew's death on Tuesday, NGS Principal Sandy Burchette issued the following statement: "Jackie Depew had a charismatic personality which motivated students and adults to set goals high. She was a master on interpreting TVASS data. Her high Social Studies scores were proof of her competitive nature.
"When Jackie coached basketball at NGS, she would work hours tutoring her players. Academics came first to her.
"I taught both of her children and became aware of the importance of family to her. There is a void at NGS which will never be filled. A Great Warrior walked at NGS and her name was Jackie Depew."
Depew was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Wanda Phillips. She is survived by her husband Shannon, son and daughter-in-law Jack and Jessie Depew; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Cory Smith; brother and sister-in-law Dexter and Leslie Phillips; sister, Tammie Spurgeon; nephew and his wife, Thomas and Laura Spurgeon; nieces, Morgan and Meagan Phillips and many other family and friends.
Depew's life will be celebrated with a special memorial service at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Newport Grammar School. The family will receive friends at the school from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. prior to the services, which will be led by the Rev. Stephen Swann.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Newport Grammar School, 301 College St., Newport , TN 37821.
