Mrs. Alta Lillian Sawyer Palmer, age 86, of Newport passed away Saturday morning April 2, 2005 at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. Early in her life Mrs. Palmer taught school at Centerview Elementary. She later retired from Cocke County Memorial Hospital after many years of employment. She was a member of Glendale United Methodist Church, Mrs. Palmer was a resident of Baptist Convalescent center. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Eunice Sawyer; one sister and three brothers. Mrs. Palmer’s survivors include, sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Lavonia Palmer of Newport, and Gary and Rhonda Palmer of Lexington, Ky.; sons, Jim Palmer of Morristown, Fred Palmer of Newport; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Davis of Newport. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday April 3, 2005 at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home Chapel with Father David Garret officiating. The family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. Monday morning at Glendale United Methodist Church Cemetery for the 10 a.m. interment. Family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Arrangements by Costner-Maloy.
