Benefit planned for Fire Chief Huskey
JAKE OLD
SEVIERVILLE —
After Ralph "Red" Huskey, chief of the Caton's Chapel-Richardson Cove Volunteer Fire Department, suffered a heart attack in July, he and his family were faced with the unfortunate circumstance of having medical bills and no health insurance.
Members from the community and some of the firefighters Huskey worked with are now putting together an event Saturday at noon at the fire department station on Pittman Center Road to benefit Huskey. The event will feature food, live music and an auction.
"A lot of his life and time went toward helping the community here, and I feel like maybe they can come out and help him as well when he needs it," Assistant Chief Marvin Rowland said. While Huskey is on medical leave, Rowland is acting as chief of the department.
Renee Huskey, Ralph Huskey's daughter, said her father never had any prominent health issues leading up to the heart attack.
"He called my brother that night at 2:30 and said, 'I'm sick,' and he went into cardiac arrest," Renee Huskey said. "He spent a week on life support. He died and came back several times, he had a stroke and it brought on dementia."
With his declining health, Renee Huskey said, her father does not know what to do with himself, being apart from the work he loved, where much of his time was once spent.
"He goes over there to the fire hall and opens the door and stands there by himself most every day," she said. "He worked daylight to dark there even when he had a job, and now that he's not able physically or mentally to do any of that I think he just feels a little lost."
Although the event is being organized by some close friends and family, Rowland said it's hoped that many people will attend.
"I think all the departments will come out and support Ralph, Chief Huskey," Rowland said. "And other than that, we're hoping for a big turnout."
Dale Noland, vice president of the fire department's board of directors, said the fire department needs to do everything it can to help Huskey.
"Chief Huskey has been a vital part of this fire department for many, many years, and his heart attack and health issues really hit the community, and the community itself has really stepped up with support," Noland said. "He's got a long road ahead of him, future operations, medical bills. The community is trying its best to support him."
Renee Huskey said she hopes that, given Ralph Huskey's prominence, the community will answer the call for help and have a strong showing at the event Saturday.
"I remember that they started it with one fire truck in our driveway 20-something years ago, until they had the land and building," Renee Huskey said. "He's been right there since day one. Anyone who has ever known him, they know that you could call him and he would do whatever he could to help, no matter what was going on."
The event will feature burgers, hot dogs and side dishes provided by A&W, along with live music, beginning at noon. The live auction will begin at 2 p.m. and last until about 6 p.m. At the end of the auction will be a drawing for a Remington shotgun, for which raffle tickets are being sold in advance.
All proceeds from the event will go toward Huskey and his expenses. For more information, raffle tickets or to donate to the auction, call one of the following:
