Police officials say crash likely involved alcohol

SEVIER COUNTY - Officials say alcohol was likely a factor in a Friday night collision that killed two Sevierville residents.
Billy Joe Rolen Jr., 36, died at the scene, and Lawton Merle Thomas, 32, died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at The University of Tennessee Medical Center from accident-related injuries, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Bob Bundren, who responded to the scene.
According to Bundren, at about 8:30 p.m., Thomas was driving southbound on Newport Highway about a quarter of a mile north of Thomas Cross Road when he crossed the center line and struck an oncoming sport utility vehicle.
The vehicle was driven by Christina Michelle Owens, 27, of Sevierville. Thomas was driving a 1990 Mazda pickup, according to Bundren.
Alcohol was present in both vehicles, and an investigation was still ongoing without any charges filed Saturday afternoon, Bundren said.
Rolen was a passenger with Thomas, and neither man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, according to Bundren.
Both Owens and her passenger, William H. Large, 48, of Branson, Mo., were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident and were listed in stable condition Saturday afternoon at UT Medical Center.
