Blount couple found dead in apparent murder-suicide

An apparent murder-suicide in the far reaches of Blount County is under investigation by the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
The bodies of Jackie Lewelling, 55, and his wife, Kay Diane Lewelling, were discovered at their home at 1337 Dripping Springs Road in Seymour, just after noon Monday, said Adina Chumley, public information officer for the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
Blount County Deputy Terry Orr went to the brick house near the Blount-Sevier county line with the couple's son, Gregg Lewelling, who requested a welfare check on his parents. He told the officer he had not had contact with his parents since Tuesday, March 5, Chumley said.
Crime scene technicians and investigators went to the residence and began gathering evidence Monday afternoon. The investigation is being led by Blount County Sheriff's Office Detective Bill Manuel.
The bodies were taken to University of Tennessee Regional Forensic Center for autopsies, Chumley said.
"I don't think much more information will be released until the autopsies are done and the investigators know more about what happened," Chumley said.
While the cause of death for both Jackie and Kay Lewelling appeared to be from gunshot wounds from a shotgun, the type of shotgun was not identified Monday evening, Chumley said.
Blount County Chief Deputy Tony Crisp said investigators did not know a lot about the situation as of Monday night.
"Our investigation is continuing and we're waiting for the reports to come in," Crisp said.
If one or both of the deaths is determined to be a homicide, it will mark the first in Blount County in 2002.

Evidence indicates man shot wife, self
Erin Hudson
A Seymour man is believed to have shot his wife and then himself, according to preliminary investigation in the discovery of two bodies Monday.
Blount County Sheriff James L. Berrong said preliminary evidence shows that Jackie Lewelling, 55, shot his wife, Kay Diane Lewelling, 56, in the jaw with a 20-gauge single-shot shotgun. He reloaded, then shot himself in the chin.
The couple's bodies were found just past noon Monday at their Seymour home located at 1337 Dripping Springs Road.
Blount County Chief Deputy Tony Crisp said the couple's son, Gregg Lewelling, had not heard from his parents since Tuesday, March 5, and had gone to the residence out of concern. When he found the house locked and did not get a response, Lewelling called for assistance from the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Terry Orr went to the residence and assisted Lewelling in forcing his way into the residence where the bodies were discovered, Crisp said.
Public Information Officer Adina Chumley said autopsies on the bodies were performed at the University of Tennessee Regional Forensic Center Tuesday, and the preliminary report supports the murder-suicide theory.
Investigators are still waiting for the final autopsy reports before the cause of death can be confirmed and the case can be closed.
"We really won't known much more until the autopsy reports come back," Chumley said.
Investigators have not released information about what might have led up to the apparent murder-suicide of the couple or how long it had been since the apparent murder-suicide had occurred before the bodies were found.
Dewayne Holloway, systems manager for the Emergency 911 Center, said Tuesday that, other than the call made by Gregg Lewelling Monday afternoon, law enforcement officers had not been dispatched to the couple's residence on an emergency call since call records were computerized in 1999.
The Lewelling residence is next door to Lewelling's Auto Parts, near the Blount/Sevier County line.
