MATHEWS, PHILIP E. - age 94, of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, February 16th, 2010, at Asbury Place Health Center, Maryville, Tennessee. Born and raised in Mississippi. Graduate of Mississippi State University. Starkville, MS. Officer training U.S. Naval Institute, Annapolis, MD. Served as Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy; veteran of World War II Pacific campaign. Spent his professional career as an Engineer for the U.S. Government. Retired as Regional Manager with U.S. Geological Survey, Little Rock, AR. Moved to Seymour, TN, after retirement and later to Asbury Place, Maryville, in 1996. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joy Grigsby Mathews, Maryville, TN; son David Jean and wife Sandy of Bowling Green, KY; daughter Dr. Lin Stepp and husband, J. L., of Knoxville, TN; grand-daughters Kelly Christian and husband, Darren, Nashville, TN, and Katherine Stepp, Hope Mills, NC; grandsons Phillip Jean and wife Emily, Moncks Corner, SC, and Max Stepp, Metairie, LA; four great grandchildren are Eli, Oliver, and Emeri Christian and Avery Jean. A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 28th, 3:00 pm, at Eusebia Presbyterian Church, Seymour, TN, where Phil and Joy Mathews have been long-time members. The family requests donations be made to Eusebia Church in lieu of flowers.
