Structure completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrive
By: JEFF FARRELL, Staff Writer March 10, 2006
SEVIERVILLE - Two people died in a trailer fire early Wednesday morning.
Sevier County Sheriff's Deputies and Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call at 1734 New Era Road at about 2 a.m., authorities said.
The fire had spread throughout the trailer by the time firefighters arrived on the scene, according to Steve Coker of the Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department.
"When we arrived on the scene, the fire was fully involved from one end to the other," Coker said. "It had been burning for a while."
A passerby alerted them that people could still be inside the structure just moments after they arrived, but Coker said there was probably not much firefighters could have done because the fire had already spread throughout the house by the time they arrived.
"We had to get the fire out first," he said.
It took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire once they arrived, he said.
Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department had four trucks and seven firefighters on the scene; Waldens Creek Volunteer Fire Department sent three firefighters, he said.
Once the fire was extinguished firefighters discovered the remains of two people about five feet apart from each other in one end of the trailer. They were near a door that led outside, Coker said.
Coker said he and an assistant fire chief discovered the bodies and tried to keep other firefighters from seeing the remains; a counselor is available for firefighters who need to speak with one, he said.
The Sevier County Sheriff's Department and the state bomb and arson unit are investigating the fire, Sheriff Bruce Montgomery said. The cause of the fire was undetermined at press time Wednesday, he said.
The identities of the victims will not be released until their families have been notified, Montgomery said. It could take a few days to positively identify the bodies, he added.
