GATLINBURG — It was “love at first site” when Sharon Adams saw the old house for sale that would become home to her business, The Huckleberry Patch.
Located at the edge of Arts and Crafts Community, the charming two-story shop includes an array of items, including smaller antique pieces, gifts, florals and consignment merchandise.
“I’ve had the shop for four years, since I lost my previous job,” said Adams. “I’ve always been a crafter, though, even before then. I do a lot of the work here myself, like re-doing old pieces for shabby chic, and some artwork. I enjoy the creating. I have a friend who helps me at different times arranging florals.”
The Huckleberry Patch has become a fast local favorite, winning this year’s Readers Choice for Best Gift Shop.
One of the best things about Adams’ job is constantly meeting new people.
“I meet a lot of nice people, and I have many return customers — I’ve made lots of new friends,” she said. “People visit from all of the surrounding states, plus places like California and North and South Dakota. There’s even one woman from England who comes to see me every year.”
The Pigeon Forge resident can’t imagine living anywhere else, especially since it’s where much of her family still lives. She and her husband, Herman, who works for the city of Pigeon Forge, have four children, six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Adams enjoys cheering her grandchildren on at basketball games, hiking, gardening and spending time outdoors.
“I do a lot of things — I stay busy,” she said.
There’s still one thing on her to-do list for the holiday season, however.
“I’m one of those people who wait until the last two weeks before Christmas to shop,” she said with a laugh.
