Whaley could succeed Price

County employee on tap as veterans officer for Sevier
SEVIERVILLE - A search committee is recommending that county employee Paul Whaley succeed the late Dan Price as county veterans service officer. The full Sevier County Commission will decide whether to approve the recommendation at its Oct. 16 meeting.
Whaley, a Vietnam War veteran, currently works in the Sevier County Records Management Department. He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and has served in the American Legion for 34 years. He serves as the veterans service office for his legion post.
"I certainly think Mr. Whaley is a fine candidate," County Mayor Larry Waters said. "It appears the committee did a thorough job. Certainly, the veterans' interests were well represented. It appears they worked hard and came up with a recommendation for the best person for the job."
The committee interviewed six candidates on Wednesday before making a decision late that evening. Earlier, members had winnowed the field down from 42 applications.
"They all looked good on paper," Committee Chairman Ray Ogle said.
"They were all good ones," said Walter Minton, president of the Sevier County chapter of Disabled American Veterans. The committee included representatives from all four county veterans organizations.
Price died in May at 58. He had been diagnosed with cancer in July 2005. He said last year that doctors attributed the probable cause to Agent Orange, a herbicide developed by the military. Price had been exposed to it while serving as a Marine in Vietnam during the late 1960s.
In the interim, the office will continue to be operated by Price's assistant, Barbara Helton.
Appointed veterans service officer in 1994, Price worked to help Sevier County's 7,000 veterans. He helped get loans and pensions for the veterans or their survivors and fought to get them needed health care, often jousting with the bureaucrats of the Veterans Administration. The VA was an agency for which he had little respect, calling the government's treatment of veterans "lousy" in an October 2005 interview with The Mountain Press.
A native of Sevier County, Price enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1966. In Vietnam, he served in the 1st Marine Division, 1st Tank Battalion, as part of a supply unit. He survived the 1968 Tet Offensive, finally leaving the country after 10 months.
