NICHOLS, HUGH CHANDLER - 87, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, January 14th at Golden Living Winwood Nursing Center in Clinton, Tennessee. Mr. Nichols was born on May 1st, 1920 on the family farm in Kodak, Tennessee. The farm is now the site of the River Islands Golf Club. He was a graduate of Carter High School where he was a member of the football team and senior class president. He attended the University of Tennessee. During World War II, he served in the United States Air Force as a pilot instructor. In 1945 he went to work for the Union Carbide Company in Oak Ridge and retired in 1983 as a chemical processes foreman. On Sept. 7, 1946 he married Martha Louella Felknor in Knoxville, Tennessee. During the early months of their marriage, they lived in the couples dormitory (where Willowbrook School is now located) in Oak Ridge and worked at the plants. Mr. Nichols was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and golfer. He had a true passion for flying airplanes and could often be seen as a young man barnstorming in Sevier County in a Stearman bi-plane. Mr. Nichols is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha; son Hugh Chandler Nichols, Jr. and his wife Jackie of Oak Ridge; daughter, Martha Susan Nichols Collins and her husband Tom of Jacksonville, Florida; granddaughters, Jennifer Suzanne Nichols of Dallas, Texas and Julie Michelle Nichols of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; niece, Kristen Huntley of Chattanooga and nephews, Michael and Mark Brown of Pensacola, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Catlett Nichols and Rosa Kate Walker Nichols; and his sister, Dorothy Louella Nichols Brown. Above all else he was the world's greatest dad and granddaddy and his memory will be forever cherished by his family. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, January 17th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Oak Ridge. Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 18th at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh Cemetery in Pigeon Forge. The Rev. Kerra Becker English, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the International Essential Tremor Foundation, P.O.
