MCCONKEY, ROBERT CRESWELL - known to most as Bob, loved few things more than flying. A highly regarded flight instructor and respected FAA pilot examiner throughout East Tennessee, Bob filed his final flight plan as he departed this world for his eternal resting place with God on Dec. 30, 2013. He died at the age of 84 surrounded by his loving family at his home in Knoxville after a brief battle with cancer. Bob McConkey was born in Sevierville, Tennessee, and attended Oak Ridge High School and the University of Tennessee. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 - 1949, stationed in Alaska, before becoming employed by Eastern Airlines in Columbia, S.C. Bob returned to Knoxville where he was needed in the family drug store business, serving as manager and co-owner of stores in Norwood, Powell, and Karns for 20 years. He worked briefly as a Project Manager at Dempster Systems before launching a long and successful second career as a corporate pilot, flight instructor, and FAA pilot examiner. As owner of the flight school Aviation Instruction, Inc. at Downtown Island Airport, Bob logged more than 25,000 hours in the pilot's seat before his health forced him to retire in 2003. Bob is survived by his devoted wife Sue; his first wife Margie McConkey and their six children, Cathy (Jim) Morrison, Bob (Susan) McConkey Jr., Mike (Gail) McConkey, Doug (Brenda) McConkey, Nancy (Eddie) Nolen and Cindy (Gary) McConkey Cox; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother, John; sister, Maxine; mother, Eleanor; and father, Robert. At his request, Bob was cremated and his remains will be buried with military honors at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E. Gov. John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, Tennessee. The memorial service and interment, with Rev. Carl Bridges Jr. officiating, will be scheduled and announced in late January. In lieu of flowers, a trust is being established for donations in his memory and will be announced along with the service time. Isaiah 40:31 "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
