Donald P. Leatherwood, age 76 of Sevierville, passed away Friday, December 5, 2014. Donald was kindhearted and never met a stranger. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Lynn Leatherwood Brown and son, David P. Leatherwood.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Sevierville and the Johnny Ownby Sunday School Class.
Donald was a retired U.S. Navy veteran, having served 21 years as a boiler technician. He made five trips to Vietnam before retiring from the Navy in 1975. He served aboard several different ships including the USS Ajax, USS Mispillion, USS Boston, USS McKean, USS Kennebec, USS Manatee and the USS Glennon. His most challenging and emotional assignment was helping with clean up after the USS Frank Evans was struck by an Australian aircraft carrier in the South China Sea in June 1969. During his naval career, Donald earned the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Navy Good Conduct Medal with four Bronze Stars, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals for Formosa and Korea and several citations for his outstanding service.

Daughter, Barbara Sheirling and husband Rusty;
Grandchildren, Jason Leatherwood and wife Misty, Amanda Leatherwood and fiancé Billy Brown, Nikki Sheirling, Jessica Sheirling and "grandson to be" Justin Hatcher; great-grandchildren, Baylee Leatherwood, Aubree Brown; brothers, J.B. Leatherwood and wife Sue, Clay Leatherwood and wife Charlene; sisters, Marie Eslinger and husband David, Irene Gibson and husband Leroy, Glenda Ogle and husband David, Ann King and husband Andy; numerous nieces and nephews including special niece, Lisa Lamon and husband Ernest.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Christmas Store at First Baptist Church, 317 Parkway, Sevierville, TN 37862.
The family will receive friends 2-4 PM Sunday with funeral service to follow at 4 PM in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Hyder will be officiating. Interment 11 AM Monday in Shiloh Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post # 104. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
