GRASSY FORK- A benefit, complete with music, food, and auction, will be held Saturday evening, Aug. 5, at Grassy Fork Elementary School to help Maxine (Williams) Black with ongoing medical bills and other expenses. Black, 53, was diagnosed with cancer last December. At the time of her diagnosis, doctors discovered the disease had spread to surrounding lymph nodes. Since December, Black has undergone surgery, extensive chemotherapy, and other treatments, and has also suffered from a serious infection. For many years, Black worked at Brock's Market in Eastport, where she became well-known and popular to a wide circle of friends and customers. After Hartford Citgo opened, she left Brock's and was employed there until her recent illness. Family and friends are sponsoring the benefit, which begins at 4:30 p.m. Assisting them will be the Grassy Fork Community Club. Lemmy Workman and Friends will be among those providing music. An auction will be held of delicious homemade cakes and other items. Donations are being accepted on a handmade quilt and a gun. Door prizes will also be given. Hamburgers, hotdogs, and all the trimmings will also be available. Black is the daughter of Winnie (Ford) Williams, Grassy Fork, and the late Lee Williams. Her husband, Arlie Black, died in 1982. She has two children, Teresa (Black) Webb and Stacy Adam Black. For more information, call Alene Green at 423-487-3620.
