Baby is killed in auto mishap
By: JAMIA BLAZER Managing Editor
October 06, 2005
A baby was killed in an automobile accident Tuesday afternoon when a pickup truck accidentally drove over the child. The 20-month-old male had been playing in the yard near the vehicle.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Officer Bob Bundren, the driver, Terry Armstrong , 40, of 2936 Six Point Way, Sevierville, was helping a friend repair a motorbike at 302 Blossom Way. As Armstrong was leaving, he noticed the child playing in the yard toward the rear of his truck. Armstrong was pulling forward out of the yard when the child apparently moved in front of the vehicle. The boy's father then began beating on the side of the truck to alert the driver the child was under his Ford F250.
A Lifestar helicopter was called and rescue personnel attempted to revive the child but he died at the scene. According to the trooper, hospital officials stated the boy sustained a head trauma.
"The driver was clearly devastated and completely cooperative during our investigation," the trooper stated.
Blood samples were taken from Armstrong as part of a routine investigation. The results are pending, but Bundren said no alcohol was present at the scene of the accident.
Charges against Armstrong are pending. According to reports, his driver's license was issued for identification purposes only.
