Chamber names citizen of the year

"He's one of these guys that is always there to help... His hand is in a lot of good things going on in Sevier County; it's in most good things."
- Allen Newton, executive director of Sevier County Economic Development Council, on Jack Delozier
SEVIERVILLE - Jack Delozier has seen a lot of changes over the years in Sevier County. Many of them he has helped oversee while serving on various boards and as superintendent of Sevier County Electric System.
Delozier was recently given the 2004 Citizen-Of-The-Year Award by the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce. The honor recognizes individuals who have given their time and talents for the betterment of Sevierville and the chamber of commerce.
After finishing his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, the Seymour native went to work as a meter reader and lineman for SCES on Jan. 1, 1946, when the utility had only 800 customers.
"I did everything there was to do at the electric system," said Delozier.
In 1971, he became superintendent where he served until his retirement in 1984, but like his working years, more than 20 years of retirement has been anything but laid back.
Delozier currently serves as chairman of the Sevier County Economic Development Council (SCEDC) and also serves on the Sevierville Public Building Authority.
SCEDC Executive Director Allen Newton praised Delozier as a hard working man who doesn't call attention to himself.
"He's one of these guys that is always there to help..." said Newton. "I've learned so much from him over the past eight years. His hand is in a lot of good things going on in Sevier County; it's in most good things."
Over the years, Delozier has been a member and president of the Lion's Club. He was also a president and 34-year member of Sevierville Noonday Rotary.
He helped oversee the building of the first Sevier County Library while serving on the library board.
He was president of the board for the Tennessee Municipal Electric Power Association and he served on the Sevier County Health and Education Board. He was also instrumental in the first Smoky Bowl Queen event at Sevier County High School.
He has seen a lot and done a lot, but he has not been alone in all these endeavors.
As a Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy student, Delozier met Willie Mae Cook, who he has been married to for 60 years. The pair the proud parents of two; grandparents of two; and great-grandparents of one.
They have been members of First Presbyterian Church in Sevierville since 1947, where Delozier has served as deacon, elder and treasurer.
