Otha Rolen announces for re-election
Otha Rolen, Second District member of the Cocke County Board of Education, has announced his bid for re-election in the August General Election.
Rolen resides at 112 Jonquil Road in Parrottsville with his wife, the former Linda Askew Rolen.
The Rolens are members of Bethel Baptist Church where he has served as song leader and she as pianist. She is employed by the Cocke County Board of Education as a bus assistant for the CCBOE Special Education Department.
Rolen is the son of the late Ora and Cora Rolen. Mrs. Rolen is the daughter of Charles and Ruby Askew of Parrottsville.
"My main concern is the further the quality of education for our children," Rolen said.
He feels working together with the board and making fair and wise decisions for all school employees and students is important.
Rolen says he is seeking re-election because he wants to continue to represent the citizens and children to the best of his abilities. "When I am approached with a question," said Rolen, "I try to help in solving each one. I enjoy being involved with the schools and attending functions in the county and community related to my position as board member."
During his terms in office, the county has seen several improvements. All elementary and both high schools have become accredited. The building program included Bridgeport, which added five classrooms, a new gymnasium, restrooms, and dressing rooms.
Renovations to the existing structures and gym became a library, computer lab, and new office. The initial office was converted to rooms for speech and health services.
Parrottsville's renovations included 10 classrooms and remodeling of the existing building.
"We are proud of these accomplishments," Rolen said.
Rolen has been a member of the Parrottsville Ruritan Club for 35 years. During this time, he has served two terms as president and numerous times as a committee chairman.
Rolen is retired from Newport Utilities where he worked as a lineman for 18 years. He was employed there 38 years. He now enjoys farming in his spare time.
Rolen has three children: Stephanie Rolen of Cosby, who graduated from Parrottsville Elementary, CCHS, and Walters State Community College. She now works at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville as a registered nurse.
