Dewey Whaley , 81, a 58-year resident of the Peshastin area, died Wed. morning, Jan. 23, 2002, in Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.
He was born on Feb. 19, 1920 to McKinley and Odie (Hill) Whaley in Greenbrier, Sevier County, TN, where he grew up and received his early education. On Nov. 6, 1938 he married Ponhee Green at Pittman Center, TN and they made their first home in the Sevierville area.
In Dec. of 1942, they came West to Leavenworth, where he was employed by the Peshastin Lumber and Box Company as a logger. In 1948, they moved to Peshastin, where Dewey continued his employment with the lumber mill until its closure. He was then employed by Blue Bird Warehouse as a security guard until his retirement in 1983.
Dewey deeply loved his wife and family. He enjoyed gardening and digging in the dirt, producing vegetables appreciated by family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ponhee , of the family home; one son, Ted Whaley of Peshastin; one daughter, Sue Whaley of Wenatchee; four grandchildren, Angie, Rachel, Gretchen and John; 8 great-grandchildren, Jake, Josh, Jessica, Jennifer, Jonathan, Will, Julynn and C.W; two brothers, Burl Whaley of Wenatchee and Harrison Whaley of Newport, TN. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Dewey Whaley .
Those who wish, may make a memorial in his name to the Peshastin Library Fund or the charity of one's choice.
Visitation will be Sun., Jan. 27, 2002 in the Ward's Funeral Chapel between 1 and 5 p.m.
A Funeral Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Dewey Whaley will be conducted at 11:30 Mon. morning, Jan. 28, 2002, in the Ward's Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Bob Jackson officiating.
The service will conclude in the chapel, with private interment in the Peshastin Cemetery.
Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
