SEYMOUR - A Sevier County husband and wife were found dead at their Seymour home Thursday afternoon, the possible result of a murder-suicide, police say.
Sevier County Sheriff Bruce Montgomery said the couple, Jeffery Wayne Latham and Sandra D. Latham, died of gunshot wounds. Jeffery Latham reportedly shot his wife and then himself.
Sevier County Sheriff's Department responded to 1102 Deer Trail Way at about 3 p.m. after a 911 call had reported a double shooting at the address.
According to an official statement from the sheriff's department, officers found Jeffery Latham, 44, and Sandra Latham, 43, lying dead in the side yard of their home.
A witness, whose identity has not yet been released by police, told police that Latham shot his wife and then shot himself, according to the statement.
Lifestar Air Ambulance responded to the scene and transported the couple to the University of Tennessee Hospital.
The couple had reportedly been in court early Thursday morning. When asked about the court case, Montgomery said he couldn't comment on the matter.

Murder/suicide couple in court same day - Lathams appear before judge in domestic violence case
2003-09-06by Laura Long MartinSpecial to The Daily Times
The husband and wife killed by gunshots Thursday in Seymour in an apparent murder/suicide had been in court earlier that day in a domestic violence case.
Sevier County Courthouse records show Jeffery Wayne Latham, 45, and Sandra D. Latham, 43, appeared in Sevier County's General Sessions Court Thursday morning.
Sheriff Bruce Montgomery said a 911 call was received by the Sevier County Sheriff's Office at 2:54 p.m. Thursday at 1152 Deer Trail Way, Seymour, and the caller stated there had been a double shooting of a man and a woman.
That morning, Jeffery Latham appeared in court on a charge of domestic violence. Assistant District Attorney John Sellars prosecuted the case.
"As far as I know, Mr. Latham had only one prior charge, a DUI in 1998,'' Sellars said.
Judge Dwight Stokes, who heard the case, said the Lathams were both calm during the court proceedings and that Sandra Latham was accompanied throughout the court proceedings by SafeSpace representative Jenny Parker Stith.
"The court session went smoothly and was in order,'' Stokes said.
Jeffery Latham was represented by Amber Haas of the public defender's office.
Stokes said it was his understanding that Jeffery Latham had initially decided to plead not guilty, but after some discussion "out in the hallway,'' decided to plead guilty.
Latham's sentence included 11 months and 29 days in jail, placement on supervised probation, community service including five days of road crew work, 24 weeks of anger-management classes, receiving an alcohol and drug assessment and following the recommendations, and a restraining order.
The restraining order stated Latham was not allowed to threaten or make any violent actions towards either his wife or 17 year-old daughter.
"The restraining order was not an absolute one, because both Latham and his wife had indicated they were trying to work out their marital issues and reconcile,'' Stokes said. "It was a 20-plus year marriage,''
Stokes said that in cases where there was a prior history of domestic violence, he imposes the strictest restraining order, but Jeffery Latham had no prior domestic violence charges.
"Mr. Latham left the courthouse Thursday morning and then reported to his probation officer's office on Joy Street,'' Stokes said. "We were halfway through the afternoon docket when we got the news (of the shooting deaths) and we were stunned.''
Montgomery said several detectives were called to respond to the scene Thursday afternoon, including Det. Mark Holt, Sgt. Mike Von Cannon, Det. Matthew Cubberly, Det. Stephanie McClure and Det. Mark Turner.
An autopsy has been ordered and is being processed by Sevier County Medical Examiner Dr. Charles Roach, Montgomery said.
"We believe that the weapon used was a .380 automatic pistol, and a witness stated Mr. Latham shot his wife and then shot himself,'' Montgomery said.
