NEWPORT-A violent rear-end crash on Highway 25/70 east of Newport, near Holt's Used Cars, on Monday, June 3, left two passengers in one vehicle dead - the driver's six-year-old son, and her father, the Tennessee Highway Patrol reported.
Lisa Renea McMahan, 37, of 3184 Old Parrottsville Highway, in Parrottsville, was driving a 2000 Honda Accord eastbound on Highway 25/70 when, around 4:30 p.m., a 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Willie C. Stokely, 83, of 3316 Williams Road, in Hartford, rear-ended the Honda as it was turning left into a driveway at 1564 East Highway 25/70, stated THP Trooper Randy Spurgeon.
Killed in the crash were Lisa McMahan's two passengers: Dylan Todd Sisk, who apparently lived with her in Parrottsville, and Charles Othell McMahan, 62, of 1564 East Highway 25/70, according to Trooper Spurgeon.
Lisa McMahan was transported by ambulance to Newport Medical Center for treatment of "possible injuries", the report stated.
Stokely also sustained “possible injuries,” Trooper Spurgeon said. Stokely was transported by private vehicle to Wellmont/Takoma Regional Hospital in Greeneville.
Both vehicles were headed east when they collided.
McMahan was turning left into the driveway of McMahan’s home at 1564 East Highway 25/7, according to Trooper Spurgeon.
Stokely’s Ford struck her Honda in the rear. After impact, the two vehicles crossed the westbound lane, went off the left shoulder of the road, and into a yard, where the Honda hit a tree head-on.
The cause of the wreck is “still under investigation,” said Trooper Spurgeon from the scene.
Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as contributing factors to the accident, he said.
Driver Lisa McMahan and Charles McMahan, who sat in the front passenger seat of the Honda, were wearing seatbelts when the wreck occurred. Dylan Sisk was secured in a child restraint seat in the back seat, according to the trooper.
Stokely was not wearing a seatbelt. Trooper Spurgeon said Stokely had a medical waiver that allowed him to drive without wearing one.
Critical emergency response teams responded to the scene within minutes, including the Newport Rescue Squad, the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department, and the Del Rio Volunteer Fire Department, Trooper Spurgeon stated.

Just Plain Talk: June rain provides softness to sad event, end of spring
The first week in June has brought with it huge amounts of rain to our hometown and put an abrupt stop to the farmers working in hayfields but is nurturing the next hay harvest.
Our readers were shocked to learn of the tragic accident on Asheville Highway Monday, June 3, that took the lives of Charlie “Buckeye” McMahan and Dylan Todd Sisk, the son of Lisa McMahan and Todd Sisk. We were asked to help promote the fundraiser on Saturday afternoon near the grandfather’s home east of Bridgeport. To be sure it was OK with the family, I called Lisa, and it is not easy to talk with someone who has just lost two loved ones so quickly. Lisa said, “I never though there were so many good people in Cocke County.” She also was happy to provide photos for the Plain Talk. When I saw Buckeye’s photo, I recognized him. You’ve seen him over the years working for Ben’s mobile home sales, as he was a carpenter building decks and porches. He also worked for Hommel and Blalock construction. Lisa was glad that people wanted to do the fundraiser and added, “It’s good to know there are so many good people here.”
