Walter Minton, age 88, of Sevierville, went to his heavenly home to be with his wife of 62 years, Inez, on Saturday, November 3, 2012. He was of the Baptist faith and attended New Era Baptist church. During his early years, Mr. Minton worked with the CCC’s in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and also helped to construct both Douglas Dam and Cherokee Dam for TVA. He served in the 36th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during World War II in South Africa and Italy, and was awarded both the Silver Star and Bronze Star. He was a charter member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 94, and actively served for more than 35 years during which he was selected as State Commander. Mr. Minton was a VAVS Representative and a strong advocate and supporter of veteran’s rights, and spent his life fighting for the rights and benefits of all veterans. He retired from ALCOA where he was a member of the 25 Year Club.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Miranda and Neal Minton, and siblings, Stella Smith, Charles Minton, and Evelyn Hayes.
He is survived by his children, Phyllis Ledbetter and husband Don, and Paul Minton; grandchildren, Jimmy Maples and wife Christy, Sandie Longmire and husband Clay, Janet Maples, Edward Ledbetter and wife Whitney, David Minton, and Leah Stalcup; great-grandchildren, Bryson, Olivia, and Wyatt Maples, Chelsie and Dylan Longmire, Jessica Gibson and husband Devin, Tabitha and Gabriella Williamson, and Conner and Ethan Ledbetter; great-great grandchildren, Selena Harmon, Emmah Cody, and one on the way; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Kenneth and Brenda Veach, and Clarence Webb.
Funeral service 7 PM Wednesday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Dewayne White officiating. Interment 11AM Thursday in Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5–7 PM Wednesday at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville.
