Sam Manning, age 77 of Pittman Center, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville. He was born April 27, 1931 in the Greenbriar Community of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He served his country in the Navy during the Korean War, retired twice, first as Captain of the Prison Guards for the Florida Department of Corrections at Hendry Correctional Institute. Then he returned to Tennessee and took the job of Police Chief for the town of Pittman Center. Also later serving as an alderman for the town. The job he loved most was gardening with his wife.
He was a member of Hills Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents Johnnie Elijah and Birgie Whaley Manning; brothers Ernest and Lee Roy Manning; sister-in-law Mae Dodgen Manning; father and mother-in-law R.L. and Lorene Neel; brothers-in-law Ernest Neel, Othel Neel and Hinton Neel; sister-in-law Eva Marie Tyus

Funeral service 7:30 PM Tuesday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Lowell Wilson, Rev. Melvin Carr and Rev. Samuel Manning officiating. Interment 10 AM Wednesday in Pigeon Forge Baptist Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 104.
