James Robert Gorrell, age 74, of Newport, died Tuesday evening, April 20, 2004, at his home.
He was a member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, veteran of U.S. Army serving 1948 through 1954, and had reached the rank of Staff Sgt.
He was a member of the D.A.V. L/CPL Charles C. Robersts Chapter 102, American Legion, and former member of the Tennessee National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ulysses and Mae Belle Allen Gorrell, and brother, Jack Gorrell.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Zula Lee Gorrell, of Newport; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Robin Gorrell, of Newport; daughter, Paula Douglas, of Newport; brothers and sisters-in-law: Rev. Gene Gorrell and wife Debbie, Carl and Bernice Gorrell, of Chestnut Hill; Ullys and Betty Gorrell Jr., of Newport; sister, Vera Freeman, Aken, S.C.; sisters and brothers-in-law: Lee Anna and Andy Spisak, of Westland, Mich., and Frances and George Lane, of Newport; sister-in-law, Marie Gorrell, of Newport; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Doris Lee, of Newport; grandchildren: Travis and wife Wendy Gorrell, of Sevierville; Renee Douglas, of Newport; Aaron Douglas, of Newport; and Matt Banner, of Newport; great-grandchild, Kylie Gorrell, of Sevierville; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Manes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Craig Ward and the Rev. Gene Gorrell officiating. Entombment will be at Resthaven Memorial Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Manes Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, 234 Lincoln Ave., Newport, TN 37821.
