Max Edwin Johnson, age 84, of Newport, passed away Friday, November 19, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Knoxville. Max was a veteran of the US Army serving with the 351st Regimental Combat Team. He was a member of Parrottsville Ruritan Club with 26 years of perfect attendance. He served as President of the club, was Zone 1 Governor, Lt. Governor and District Governor of the Smoky Mountain Ruritan. He served as Fire Chief of Parrottsville Fire Department for several years. He was a former member of the Hard Times Car Club, and his main hobby was restoring a 1931 Model A and had many antiques thru the years. He also enjoyed going to car shows. He worked with the Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade as chairman of the antique car show for many years. He was a member of the Cocke County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. Max was also a charter member of the Cocke County Habitat for Humanity and served as supervisor of the 3rd house built in Cocke County. He enjoyed farming, having a farm at Clear Creek which he sold in 1990. He retired from Newport Utilities with 22 years of service. Max and his wife enjoyed many bus tours over the years. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hurst Watts Johnson; daughter, Sherry Morris; grandchildren, Kim Morris and Tyler Morris and special great grandchild, Natalie Reed all of Newport; He is also survived by three sisters, Bea Jordan, of Greeneville, Anita Clark of Greeneville and Mildred Smith of Michigan; sisters-in-law, Peggy Johnson of Virginia, Shirley Shaffer of Kingsport; brothers-in-law Harold Hurst and wife Elizabeth, Bob Hurst and wife Marjorie all of Newport; also several special nieces, nephews and other family and friends. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Manes Funeral Home. The funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Monday, November 22, 2010 at Salem-Lutheran Church, with burial to follow in Salem-Lutheran Cemetery. Mr. Johnson will lie in state at the church from 1-2 pm prior to the funeral. Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Cemetery, in care of J. R. Kinser, 1615 Old Parrottsville Highway, Parrottsville, TN 37843.
