Oren Wilson (Bill) Johnson, former Parrottsville postmaster, died early Tuesday morning, October 6th, at his home, 447 Belmont Road, Manchester, following a long illness.
Born October 10, 1916, in Greene County, Mr. Johnson was a son of Leslie Hiram Johnson and Augusta Cooter Johnson.
After completing his schooling, he enlisted in the United States Army where he spent 29 1/2 years. He participated in the invasions of both Africa and Sicily and also landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Four days later he was wounded at St.Lo, France. After the war, he was stationed for two years in Occupied Japan.
On November 12, 1948, he was married to Eddith Emma Smith of Parrottsville. They have two sons—Oren Paul and Alan Lynn Johnson.
Following Mr. Johnson’s retirement from the military in 1964 they returned to make their home in Parrottsville. In 1968, Mr. Johnson was appointed postmaster there, serving until 1986. In 1989 the Johnsons moved to Manchester.
Surviving are Mrs. Johnson; children, Oren and Karen Johnson, Atlanta, Georgia, and Alan and Cindy Johnson, Manchester; grandson, Eliot David Johnson, Atlanta, Georgia; and brothers, L.H. Johnson, Greeneville, and Thomas Lee Johnson, Bluff City.
Funeral services will be Thursday, October 8th, at 1 p.m., at Coffee County Funeral Home with interment in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Manchester.
