    Notes:

    John H. left Tennessee in 1839 for Texas, then a Republic, and settled in the eastern portion of the state where he resided until his death. Without a doubt, John H. Reagan is still Gatlinburg's most illustrious son.

    A brief summary of his accomplishments includes: surveyor of public lands in Texas; lawyer, admitted to the bar in 1846; state representative 1847-1849; district judge, 1852-1857; Representative to U. S. Congress, 1857-1861; delegate to Secession Convention of Texas in 1861; Postmaster General of Confederacy; acting Secretary of Confederacy. In 1875 he was a member of the State Constitutional Convention; U.S. Representative, 1875-1887; U. S. Senator from Texas, 1887-1891; a member of State Railroad Comission, served as chairman 1897-1903.

    John was imprisoned after the Civil War presumably for his high post in the Confederacy.

    John H. returned to his birth place only once, 22 August 1900, after sixty-three years absence. He and his wife received a heartwarming reception in Sevierville where he spoke at the Courthouse and received friends at a reception later. He spent two days visiting with his cousins in Gatlinburg.

    John H. Reagan reared his first wife's two sons.

    Notes:

    Joseph Daniel Reagan was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church,
    South. He became an exorter when 18 years of age.

    In 1852 he emigrated to Missouri. He was married to his wife by Davie Coulter,
    pastor of New Bloomfield Prebysterian Church in Calloway County, Missouri.

    He was ordained as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South at
    Jefferson City, Missouri in 1867, having been appointed pastor of Lebanon
    Circuit. Two years later he resided at Stoutland, where he remained except a
    short residence in Richland until his death.

    He was a man of good literary atainment, being a forceful and eloquent public
    speaker, a vigorous and fluent prose writer, a successful teacher, and a poet
    of considerable ability.

    "The funeral was held at the Baptist Church in Stoutland, Missouri, by Elder J.
    M. Hibbs, of the Baptist Church, on Saturday, January 24th, 1891, in the
    presence of most of the family and a large congregation of sympathizing friends
    and acquaintances. The remains were interred Saturday evening in the Stoutland
    Cemetery."

    Notes:

    Morris R. Reagan moved with his parents to the vicinity of Sevierville,
    Tennessee in the late 1820's. He was living with his parents at the tim of the
    1830 Federal Census of Sevier County and the 1840 Federal Census of Knox
    County, Tennessee.

    Morris R. Reagan migrated with his brother and sisters to the State of Texas
    after their father's death in 1847. There he was living with John Henninger
    Reagan, his older brother at the time of the 1850 Federal Census of Henderson
    County, Texas.

    He and his first wife Martha Julia were listed in the 1860 Federal Census of
    Travis County, Texas. There were two daughters in the household at that time:
    S. A., age 3; and J., age 1.

    Morris R. Reagan was appointed as a "mail agent for Texas" in September 1861.
    He was the younger brother of John H. Reagan, Postmaster General.

    In the "Annals of Travis County and of the City of Austin" by Frank Brown, it
    is recorded that Morris R. "resided about two and a half miles South of town,
    at the Terrill place" and he "accidently stepped off the gallery, at night, and
    was so seriously injured that he died a few days thereafter."

    Notes:

    William Reason Reagan went to Texas in 1849 and settled first in Red River
    County. There he attended McKinney College. After leaving that institution,
    he taught school for two years at Marlin, Falls County. During his spare time,
    he studied law and in 1857 was admitted to the bar. He opened an office and
    practiced law. In 1874, he romoved to Reagan, a small town named for him. In
    1880, he moved to Georgetown where he lived until his death.

    During the Civil War, he first enlisted in the 13th Cavalry, but in 1862, was
    appointed enrolling officer for Falls County. While the war was in progress,
    he was entrusted with an important mission to Richmond, Virginia in the
    interest of the Postal service of the Confederacy.

    In 1865, he was elected judge of Falls County.

    "The Waco Examiner" records an episoded that took place during the
    reconstruction days in the State of Texas:

    "Judge Reagan, from Falls County, was arrested on the 5th inst., on the square,
    and carried to the military camp. The following are the particular: The Judge
    was suspected of having thrown a brick-bat into the military camp, and upon
    this suspicion was arrested by the soldiers, and liberated shortly after his
    arrest. The Judge again appeared on the square armed, and the Sheriff, Mr.
    Morris, interpreting his demonstration as hostile, arrested him again, and upon
    which he was taken by the U.S. soldiers in the custody at their camps."
