William Frederick Pyle

Commander Pyle is a native of McAlisterville, Pennsylvania. He joined the Navy in 1980 as an Aviation Firecontrolmen and served in FIGHTER SQUADRON TWO (VF 2) from 1981 through 1985. During his VF-2 tour, he made Western Pacific deployments in USS RANGER (CV 61) and USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63). He graduated from the Pennsylvania State University NROTC program in 1990 majoring in Electrical Engineering.

He reported to the USS SOUTH CAROLINA (CGN 37) in 1991 and served as Fire Control Officer and First Lieutenant. In 1994, he reported to CRUISER DESTROYER GROUP TWO and served as Flag Lieutenant. During this tour, he made the maiden deployment with George Washington Battle Group to the Adriatic Sea and Arabian Gulf.

He pre-commissioned USS PORTER (DDG 78) as Operations Officer from 1998 through 2000. His second department head tour was in the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57) as Operations Officer from 2000 through 2002. During this tour, LAKE CHAMPLAIN served as the West Coast Air Warfare Commander for Operation Noble Eagle and deployed in support Operation Enduring Freedom. From 2003 through 2005 he served as Executive Officer of the USS PORTER (DDG 78).

Shore assignments include the Naval Post Graduate School where he majored in Financial Management, budget analyst in the Office of Budget on the Secretary of the Navy staff, and Flag Secretary to the Commander, United States Joint Forces Command.

Personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy Achievement Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

Commander Pyle and his devoted wife have three sons.
