  1. 2.  Mitchell Phillips was born 14 Jan 1924, Haywood County, North Carolina (son of Spencer "Spence" Phillips and Rachel Hembree); died 22 Mar 1977, Cosby, Cocke County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

    Attended Pittman Center School and transferred to Cosby High when his family lost their second land to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Mitchell played a mean game of basketball, similar to those played by his youngest son Max.

    Mitchell served as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class and was Captain of his gun mound. He was joined in San Francisco, California during World War II, by his wife, Helen. In 1947 they moved back to Cosby, Tennessee where they built a house next door to his parents.

    Jobs were scarce and times were hard. He chose to go North to find work rather than make moonshine, another alternative during those lean days. He worked in Willmington, Delaware and for Ford Motor Company in Cleveland, Ohio. He lost his left hand in a construction accident in 1966. He was a South Paw who had to
    learn to use his right hand. After the accident he went to college at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. As time passed he went to work for Firestone Corporation in Newport, Tennessee as a security guard. He went into the factory working his way up until 1977 at the time of his death, he was a shift foreman for Firestone.

    Married in Sevierville Baptist Church by Rev. W. J. Beasley.

    Helen walked from the home site (2-3 miles) Copeland Creek to Pittman Center to school. Later they rode in a horse drawn wagon driven by Penson Whaley. She raised and sold beans and tobacco, kept the farm going and three kids in school. She cut and sold pulpwood, swinging a saw and axe along side her dad.

    She acted as a 4-H Club leader while her kids were in school. Helen worked in Gatlinburg as a maid, cashier and dining room manager. Helen is known throughout the community as a hard worker and by her three children as the best mom in the world.

    Notes:

    Michael was a hard worker. He farmed and cooked in logging camps. Later he cooked in the CCC camp at Greenbriar, Tennessee. After he and Lonnie divorced he raised their two kids. Later he lived with his son on Cosby, Tennessee.

    Lonnie was called "Granny Williams". She was a character and could tell some tall tales. She loved to fish in Douglas Lake and drove an old truck. She also loved her grand kids and took them on many fishing trips. Granny Williams gardened and had a rummage sale from her house where she lived until her death on Cosby from a heart attack.

    Promised a lifetime stay on her 600 acre homestead by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She was a petite red head. She raised her large family and kept house until she died.

    Surname also listed as Vance.

    The following is from a letter written in October 1997 and in the possession of Jay S. Webb, a Parton descendant. "Granny Margaret told me several times (when I was small and in later years) that during the war between the north and the south, there was a young soldier who come from New Jersey who was separated from his unit. Her mother hid him under the house when rebel scouts came looking for him or when neighbors came visiting. You could not trust many people in those times. This went on for months until the young man had a chance to make it back to his own lines. His name was MICHAEL TEAGUE. The couple fell in love, the results of was that Mary "Pop" became pregnant with Granny Margaret. In time the young man left and went back to his own army. Several years later his father and sister came to granny's mother on Copeland Creek, Sevier County and asked her to let Margaret go home with them. They promised the best of schooling, a good home with the best of food and clothing, with lots of love. They were very well off, but granny Mary said she would raise her daughter herself." The letter is signed 'Helen Lucille Parton Phillips' Helen, a great-grandaughter of Mary "Pop", was borm October 15, 1925 and is doing just fine in Cocke County, TN.
