boat. They went to the home of his uncle Ben, to pick cotton and possibly work
on the railroad. Their first son to live, George Mack, was born in Ennis, Texas
in 1896. Katie and George Mack returned to Hartford, traveling in the caboose
of a train and Dickey followed after the crops were harvested that year.

Dickey and Katie then moved their family to Hazelwood, North Carolina where
Dickey worked as a tanner. In 1906, when Champion moved into the area he got a
job as carpenter for them. He went with a crew to Savannah, Georgia and was
getting ready to move his family there when he died of malaria.
