    Notes:

Mitchell Porter was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylavania, April 7, 1759. While living at Winchester, Virginia, in 1777, he served three months and two weeks in Captain Thurston's Virginia Company and fought in a skirmish at Quibbletown, New Jersey. He moved to Botetourt, Virginia, in 1780 and in that year he served three months in Captain William Handley's Company under Major Campbell and was in a skirmish near Salisbury, North Carolina. He later served two months in Captain Arbuckle's company against the Indians at Point Plesant, but the dates of this service are unknown. He was granted a pension for this war [Revolutionary] service in 1832. Mitchell Porter was a devout Methodist, and Bishop Asbury tells in his journals of stopping at the Porter home in 1802, 1808, and 1810. It is noteworthy that all deceased persons in this direct line back to the revolutionary War soldier are buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Sevier County, Tennessee. Spencer Clack Chapter DAR erected a monument here to Mitchell Porter. (Ref: DAR Application Grace Runyan McCall and Blanche Runyan Chilton).
