Generation: 4

  1. 8.  James H. Reagan was born 1826, Sevier County, Tennessee (son of Jeremiah "Jerry" Reagan and Mary Huskey); died 14 May 1868, Jackson County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

James H. Reagan was born in the White Oak Flats community untile his marriage.
In both the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee, he is
    listed with his parents.

James H. went across the Great Smoky Mountains and met his future bride, Martha
"Patsy" Bradley on the Bradley Fork of Oconalufty River in Haywood County,
    North Carolina.

Shortly after the marriage, James H. and his wife Martha "Patsy" Bradley moved
to Sevier County, Tennessee for a "temporary" two years stay. Then they
returned to Bradley Fork of Oconalufty River in Haywood County, North Carolina
    to establish their permanent home.

On 29 May 1848, James H. bought 89 acres of land from his father-in-law Isaac
Bradley for $10.00. This land was located on the watershed of Bradley Fork,
part of Oconalufty River in Haywood County, North Carolina. It began "at a
Beech on the North side of said River on the waggon Road..."

James H. and his wife Martha were listed in the 1850 Federal Census of Haywood
County, North Carolina. There were three children in the household at that
time: Sarah, age; Thomas, age 3; and Jerrymiah, age 1.

On 9 January 1851, James H. bought 25 acres of land from John Hyde of Cherokee
County, North Carolina for $25.00. This land was located "on the left hand
fork of Ocona Lufta River known by the name of Morrison's Flats" in Haywood
    County, North Carolina.

In 1860 James H. and his wife Martha were listed in the Federal Census of
Jackson County, North Carolina. They now had seven children in the household.
    They were: Sarah, age 16; Thomas, age 14; Chasteen, age 10; Marcus, age 8;
Jeremiah A., age 6; John, age 4; and Isaac, age 1.

On 22 June 1861, James H. sold 10 acres of land to his brother-in-law Thomas
Bradley for $10.00. This land located on the watershed of Bradley Fork, part
of Oconalufty River in Jackson County, North Carolina. It began "at a Beech on
the North bank of the left hand fork of Oconalufty on the bank of the Road
above the residence of the said Thomas Bradley..." This was the land that
James H. had purchased from his father-in-law Isaac Bradley.

Two years later on 2 March 1863, James H. Reagan enlisted as a private in
Company F. Thomas' Legion which was commanded by Colonel William H. Thomas. It
is most likely that he served out his enlistment in Company F, Thomas' Legion
from Jackson County, North Carolina. After he was discharged, he went home to
    resume farming on his lands.

James H. died in the Oconalufty River community and was probably buried in the
Bradley-Carver Cemetery in the Bradley Fork area, Great Smoky Mountains
    National Park.

In the Abstract of Titles for Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there was
noted "outstanding interests of the heirs at law of James Reagan for a
one-eight each in that portion of tract" of land. Also another interesting
item about this family was noted in the file...

"James Reagan died leaving the following children and heirs at law,
    to wit.;
    "Sarah Roberts, husband Dan Roberts
    "Thomas Reagan
    "J. Chastain Reagan
    "Mark Reagan
    "Bige Reagan
    "John C. Reagan
    "Isaac Reagan
"Mary Jane Bradley, husband General Bradley"

Combining these excerpts and the census records verifies the names of the
children of James and Martha "Patsy" Bradley Reagan.

James married Martha "Patsy" Bradley Abt 1844, , Haywood, North Carolina. Martha (daughter of Isaac Bradley and Sarah Coxey) was born 1824, , Burke, North Carolina; died 23 Jan 1883, Swain County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Martha "Patsy" Bradley was born 1824, , Burke, North Carolina (daughter of Isaac Bradley and Sarah Coxey); died 23 Jan 1883, Swain County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Martha "Patsy" Bradley Reagan was listed as the head of household in the 1870
Federal Census of Jackson County, North Carolina. There were six children and
one daughter-in-law in the household at that time. They were: John C., age 19
    and Martha C., age 26; James M., age 17; Jeremiah A., age 15; John C., age 13;
    Isaac E., age 11; and Mary J., age 7.

Again, Martha was listed as the head of household in the 1880 Federal Census
of Swain County, North Carolina. She had two children still living at home
then: Isaac E., age 21; and Mary J., age 17.

Martha died in the Oconalufty River community and it is assumend that she was
buried probably beside her husband in the Bradley-Carver Cemetery in the
Bradley Fork area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

    Notes:

Andrew Jackson Bradley enlisted on 30 April 1838 at Valley River, Cherokee County, North Carolina as a private in Captain Thomas Angel's Company, 3rd Regiment of North Carolina Militia for six months duty. He participated in rounding up the Cherokee Indians and starting them on the westward journey to a new reservation in Oklahoma. This was the "Cherokee Trail of Tears." He was discharged on 6 July 1838 at Franklin, Macon County, North Carolina. His personal description at enlistment was: 5 feet 8 inches in height, grey eyes, auburn hair, and fair complexion.

Andrew Jackson Bradly was married to Mary Elvira Trentham by Reverend Richard Evans.

Prior to 26 December 1850, Andrew Jackson Bradley bought 100 acres of land from Solomon & Peter Milsaps. This land was located "on the right hand fork of the west fork of Little Pigeon River, it being part of an Entry made by David Millsaps including the land where Solomon & Peter Millsaps formerly lived..." Then on 26 December 1850, Andrew Jackson Bradley sold this tract of land to James Wesley Huskey.

There is a family story of the Civil War days. Uncle Isaac (Ike) Bradley often told the narrative as it is given below.

"Way back in times of Civil War - that was before my days - in time of the Civil War they drove them out of here. The Rebels, you know they drove the Rebels out, and they got so hard on my mind they wouldn't let them make nothing. They moved them to North Carolina. They got started across there and they aimed to go thru on the second day out but they got water-bound and they couldn't get to them. They had to stay there about five days.

"Five days. They lived on three pounds of sheep's tallow. Mutton tallow, they called it. They ate that mutton tallow and kept alive, five days until the water runned out.

"I can't dispute it because my mammy's told it, my brothers have told it and my brother's fussin' got to 'em when the river got out.

"My daddy owned, in time of Civil War, he owned Trentham property over by the forks of the river. He owned two or three hundred acres there, but they run him out. He was in the Rebel army and they runned him out. He owned all that. He got it to take care of his mammy-in-law, my grandmother, and when they runned him out he gave it to his other brother-in-laws - Uncle Robert and Uncle Isaac Trentham. He gave it to them to take care of their own, so he just turned it over to them."

After his Confederate service in Civil War, Andrew Jackson Bradley received a grant of 100 acres of Colonel William Thomas. The land was located in the area of Tow String Creek, Swain County, North Carolina (now Great Smoky Mountains National Park). The original hand-written document by Colonel William Thomas is still in existence and in possession of one of Andrew Jackson Bradley's descendants.

Andrew Jackon Bradley was listed in the 1850 through 1880 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee.
