  1. 2.  William Shields was born 1795, , Sevier County, Tennessee (son of James Shields and Penelope White); died 27 Jan 1840, Indianapolis, Indiana.

    Notes:

    William Shields served in the Black Hawk War, served in the Indiana State
    Legislature in 1839-1840, was a farmer, millwright, boatsman and a democrat.

    Christine Brown lists birth as 1801 and death in Seymour, Indiana.

    On the 16th day of September, 1816, the county court met and ordered that the jail at Brownstown, built by John Parker, be received, the contract being complied with agreeably to condi- tions thereof; and John Parker was allowed $60 for building said jail. And the said John Parker, having suffered loss in the building of said jail, he is allowed $16 extra. The sheriff was allowed $8.75 for the confinement, receiving and discharging of William Shields, a prisoner.

  1. 4.  James Shields was born 10 Mar 1770, Augusta County, Virginia (son of Robert Shields and Nancy Stockton); died 2 Feb 1848; was buried Seymour, Indiana.

    Notes:

    In 1784 James accompanied his mother and father, and his sister and four
    smaller brothers to the Yadkin Settlement in North Carolina. The next year he
    helped to bring them on pack animals to Shields Fort in Sevier County,
    Tennessee, via the Watauga and Traders Trail. In 1808, he settled in Indiana,
    building his own Shields Fort on the present site of Seymour, Indiana.

    James is buried in Riverview Cemetery by the side of his wife.
