  3. 10.  Richard E. "Preacher Dick" Evans, Rev. was born 4 Jan 1824, Tennessee (son of Jacob Evans and Martha Ogle); died 6 Dec 1901; was buried Forks of the River Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

    Affectionately called "Preacher Dick", he was received into the White Oak Flats Baptist Church in October of 1839 "by experience". In October of 1843, he was granted the right "to exercise a public gift wherever his lot Should be Cast." He was ordained at the church on the 27th of October 1846 "through the assistance of Brothers Isaac Kimbro and Eli Roberts as presbytery..." (Church minutes book of White Oak Flats Baptist Church). This began his long and fruitful service to the Lord and his fellow man.

    Beside the Gatlinburg Church, he served New Salem Church, Lebanon in the Glades, Friendship in Greenbrier, the Hills Creek Church and at both Evan's Chapel No. 1 and 2. He also made visits to the Indians in North Carolina. Dr. Burnett, in his book about pioneer ministers credited Richard Evans with converting more than 10,000 souls to Christ and personally baptizing more than 1,800 persons.

    November 1836 I have surveyed for Isaac Ogle four hundred acres of land in said
    County on the waters of the West Fork of Little Pigeon River. Beginning on a
    white Oak in the low gap at or near his line, running S Four poles and sixteen
    links to a pin and black oak at or near the line of Thomas Ogle, then with
    vacant land S 83 E on hundred and seventy two poles to a spruce pine on a
    branch, S 46 E thirty seven poles to a beech, N 57 E two hundred and six poles
    crossing the creek to a large chestnut, N 33 W one hundred and sixty poles to a
    stake, S 85 W two hundred and seventy five poles to a stake on the Brier Hill,

    and convey to Thomas I. Ogle, his heirs and assigns for the consideration of
    Sixty five dollars to me paid the following described tracts piece or tracts of
    land in the State of Tennessee, Sevier County and District No. 11 and bounded
    as follows, to wit.

    Beginning at a white oak in the low gap at or near Thomas Ogle's line, running
    S four poles and sixteen links to a pine and black oak, S 83 E one hundred and
    forty seven poles to a black gum a corner to a conditional line between the
    said Isaac Ogle and Thomas Ogle, then with the said conditional N 14 W seventy
    eight poles to a beach, N 54.5 E two hundred and five poles to a stake on the
    old line, thence with the same N 33 W sixty poles to a stake, S 85 W two
    hundred and seventy five poles to a stake on the hill, S 15 W one hundred and
    sixty poles crossing creek to a stake and two spruce pines, then a direct line
    to the Beginning, containing two hundred and eighty two acres be the same more

    Thomas Ogle's line, thence with the same N 79 E thirty poles to a stake, thence
    N 6 W forty eight poles and four links to a stake, N 40 E sixty nine poles to a
    stake, N 44 W twenty eight poles to a stake, thence with Isaac Ogle, N 70 E
    twenty nine poles to a stake, thence with N 25 E twelve poles to a stake,
    thence N 65 E sixty eight poles to the Beginning except the part that was
    deeded to Thomas Ogle which is twelve acres and ten poles TO HAVE AND TO HOLD
    the same to the said Thomas I. Ogle, his heirs and assigns forever.

    I do covenant with the same Thomas that I am lawfully seized of said land have
    a good right to convey it and that the same is unencumbered. I do further
    covenant and bind myself, my heirs and representatives to warrant and forever
    defend the title to the said land unto the said Thomas I. Ogle, his heirs and
    assigns against the lawful claims of all persons whatever.
