"Granny Margaret told me several times (when I was small and in later years) that during the war between the north and the south, there was a young soldier who come from New Jersey who was separated from his unit. Her mother hid him under the house when rebel scouts came looking for him or when neighbors came visiting. You could not trust many people in those times. This went on for months until the young man had a chance to make it back to his own lines. His name was MICHAEL TEAGUE. The couple fell in love, the results of was that Mary "Pop" became pregnant with Granny Margaret. In time the young man left and went back to his own army. Several years later his father and sister came to granny's mother on Copeland Creek, Sevier County and asked her to let Margaret go home with them. They promised the best of schooling, a good home with the best of food and clothing, with lots of love. They were very well off, but granny Mary said she would raise her daughter herself." The letter is signed 'Helen Lucille Parton Phillips' Helen, a great-grandaughter of Mary "Pop", was borm October 15, 1925 and is doing just fine in Cocke County, TN.
