    A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Staff Sergeant Joe L. Dunigan.
    With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Staff Sergeant Joe L. Dunigan, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.
    WHEREAS, Joe "Joey" L. Dunigan was born on September 29, 1966, a native of Benton, Marshall County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on March 11, 2004; and
    WHEREAS, Joey L. Dunigan was the loving son of Joe Dunigan of Louisville and Dena Bryant of Benton; he was the stepson of Sammie Bryant of Benton; he was the devoted husband of Misty Dunigan of Fort Riley, Kansas; he was the proud father of two sons, Dustin Dunigan and Jesse Dunigan; and he was the caring brother of two siblings, Michael Bryant of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Robin Colley of Benton; and
    WHEREAS, in 1984, upon graduation from Marshall County High School, Joey L. Dunigan dedicated himself to a career of military service by enlisting in the United States Army; and
    WHEREAS, during his 20 year career, Staff Sergeant Joey L. Dunigan dutifully served tours in various locations including overseas tours in Germany and Korea; before being assigned to Fort Riley in 2002, he served as an Army recruiter in Nashville; and
    WHEREAS, in 2002, Staff Sergeant Joey L. Dunigan was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; he was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in September 2003; and
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Joey L. Dunigan was on a mission to guard a convoy of United States Marines near Fallujah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near the Humvee he and a comrade-in-arms occupied; and
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Joey L. Dunigan was a highly decorated soldier; he received many awards during his distinguished career including the Army Commendation medal, the National Defense Service medal, the Korean Service medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary medal for overseas service supporting efforts against terrorism, the Global War on Terrorism Service medal for domestic service supporting efforts against terrorism, a Recruiter Badge, and a Parachutist Badge; he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service medal; and
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Joey L. Dunigan served his country with honor and distinction; he demonstrated great leadership and tremendous skill as a soldier; and
    WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Kentucky is deeply grateful to Staff Sergeant Joey L. Dunigan for the sacrifice he made protecting the freedom of the Iraqi people and ensuring the establishment of democracy; and
    WHEREAS, the passing of Staff Sergeant Joey L. Dunigan has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;
    NOW, THEREFORE,
    Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:
    Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Staff Sergeant Joe L. Dunigan and extends to his family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy.
    Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Staff Sergeant Joe L. Dunigan.
    Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the wife of Staff Sergeant Joe L. Dunigan, Mrs. Misty Dunigan, 5932 Longstreet Drive, Fort Riley, Kansas 66442, and to the mother of Staff Sergeant Joe L. Dunigan, Mrs. Dena Bryant, 162 Billy Henson Road, Benton, Kentucky 42025.
